Gillette Won't Renew Tiger Woods' Contract
Filed under: PGA, Sports Business and Media
The company used Woods, Roger Federer, Lionel Messi and dozens of other athletes as part of its three-year "Gillette Champions" marketing campaign. Gillette said Thursday it was phasing out that program and not renewing the contract with Woods and several other athletes. It stopped using Woods himself in the campaign months ago.
The golfer was once the most sought-after pitchman in sports and was the first athlete to earn $1 billion from endorsement agreements. However, many corporations cut ties or distanced themselves from Woods after the scandal that broke just over a year ago and dominated headlines for months.
Accenture LLP, AT&T Inc. and Gatorade all dropped Woods as an endorser. Companies such as Gillette and Tag Heuer didn't end their relationships outright but stopped featuring him in advertisements.

Demi Lovato Will Not Star In 'The Avengers'
Disney starlet was rumored to be up for a role in the all-star superhero film.

Demi Lovato still has her 2011 touring plan, but one gig the teen sensation doesn't have on her agenda is a starring role in "The Avengers." Contrary to reports, the 18-year-old singer/actress will not be featured in the film about a team of Marvel superheroes, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
THR reports that sources inside Lovato's and Marvel's camps are "denying across the board" that the "Camp Rock" star is involved in any way in the all-star comic book adaptation, which is tentatively due in 2012. Part of the difficulty in hiring the actress is that the Joss Whedon-directed film will begin shooting in spring 2011 and the starlet is still undergoing her medical treatment for "emotional and physical issues."
Despite the circulating Lovato rumor, Marvel may still be on the lookout for another female actress to join the male-heavy cast. As of now, "The Avengers" superhero lineup includes Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Samuel Jackson (Nick Fury), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor).
Things have been looking up for the "Sonny With a Chance" star. Not only did the songstress come to an agreement with dancer Alex Welch, whom she allegedly punched before leaving her joint tour with the Jonas Brothers, but the Disney star was also able to spend some time with her family on Christmas Day. She was spotted with her family on the holiday getting food near her treatment facility in Woodridge, Illinois.

ESPNEWS Anchor Will Selva Suspended for Plagiarism
Filed under: Lakers, Spurs, Sports Business and Media
An ESPNEWS anchor has been suspended for an unknown period for lifting portions of a newspaper column and using them in a script without attributing where the passage originated. Will Selva, an anchor at ESPN for three years, issued an apology Wednesday for taking all but of a few words from the lead of a column written by Kevin Ding of the Orange County Register, previewing Tuesday's game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the San Antonio Spurs.
Selva, who anchored the overnight "Highlight Express," which repeated through the morning, used Ding's sentences virtually verbatim to set up the game highlights. In a statement issued by ESPN, Selva said he had been researching stories from local newspapers, and came across Ding's column. Selva said he cut and pasted the story into his script, but forgot to write his own words.

Rumor: AT&T to announce the Motorola Olympus at CES
The unsourced rumor du jour is that Motorola and AT&T will be announcing the Motorola Olympus during CES next week. The long rumored 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor has been making its rounds on the web for the past few months now. And that's basically it, not much is known about the device. Judging by the few leaked photos, the phone looks like it will sport a screen larger than 3.7 inches.
It's also worth mentioning that this is the first time we'll see Motorola bringing a high-end Android powered phone to another carrier outside of Verizon. Head into the Rumored Devices forum to see what others are chatting about. [via IntoMobile]
Update: We've independently heard that the Olympus definitely is in testing on AT&T, with a 4-inch screen with 480x854 resolution.

Stephen Dorff Says Filming 'Somewhere' Was 'Pretty Extreme'
'It's the most naked part you could ever play,' Dorff says of his role in the Sofia Coppola-directed film.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz
For many moviegoers familiar with his work, Stephen Dorff is most recognized for playing dark, destructive and evil characters à la Deacon Frost in "Blade" — the role for which he took home an MTV Movie Award for Best Villain. His new movie "Somewhere," written and directed by Sofia Coppola, is a complete departure from much of his previous work, a role that required Dorff to step into new territories of both filmmaking and acting.
"This one was pretty extreme because [Coppola] wanted to experience some real-time acting on film," Dorff told MTV News of Coppola, whose unique directorial style involved getting lingering shots of his character just staring off in the distance or literally doing nothing. "So if I smoke a cigarette, that might be one line in the script but in the movie it might be five minutes, so it's very authentic," he added.
Dorff said the role of Johnny Marco, a disenchanted movie star and absent father to 11-year-old Cleo (played by Elle Fanning), was the most challenging of his career thus far.
"It's the most naked part you could ever play, really, because there's no plot driving the emotion," he said. "There's no explosions, nobody dying to trigger an emotional breakdown, there's no bank robbery. This is a film that's based on almost a portrait of a guy we open with, and we find the monotony in his life. Then when Elle comes into play, Cleo, it becomes really this movie about an adolescent father who needs a change in his life or he's headed for disaster."
Dorff described Marco as broken, lost, confused and bored with his life, until his daughter comes along and he starts to realize how spending time with her, actually being a father, makes him happy.
"While he's been going through that, he's missed probably three years of crucial time with his daughter and the fog starts to lift throughout the film," he explained. "He starts to see this beautiful girl and starts to get his act together."
"Somewhere" began a limited run in theaters on Wednesday.

Secret Sony Ericsson device photographed by another secret SE device
Leaked images of unannounced devices aren't uncommon, but they always seem to make waves in the blogosphere. But the waves are a little higher when an unannounced device is caught on camera by another secret device. Speculation suggests the handset we're seeing here is the Sony Ericsson Hallon -- a yet-to-be announced device toting Gingerbread and front-and-rear cameras.
The device responsible for capturing these images is believed to be the Sony Ericsson Anzu -- which is rumored to be the successor to the Xperia X10. Formerly referred to as the X12, the Sony Ericsson Anzu is said to have a 12-megapixel camera. However, the resolution of the images that appeared on Picasa were 8-megapixels. So either these shots weren't shot at maximum resolution, or Sony Ericsson went with a lower-spec camera. And for all we know, these images could have been captured with a completely different device altogether.
Check out another image of the SE Hallon after the break. [Blog of Mobile!! via TechRadar]

Filed under: Rangers, Royals, MLB Rumors, MLB Inside Scoop, MLB Hot Stove, Sports Business and Media
Greinke is now being represented by Jeff Berry and Casey Close of CAA, a major league source told FanHouse. He had been represented by SFX.
The timing of the switch is interesting, as Greinke could finally get his wish for a trade out of Kansas City this winter. He was described by one person recently as being "fed up" with the Royals after enduring one losing season after another since his major league debut in 2004. He expressed that frustration publicly last season, saying he doubted the Royals' rebuilding plans would come to fruition before his contract expires at the end of the 2012 season.

Five-Step Drop: Boise's Costly Loss
Filed under: Baylor, Boise State, Illinois, Southern Miss, Utah, Washington State, WAC, General CFB Insanity, Bowl Games, Sports Business and Media
1. When Boise State lost to Nevada on Nov. 26, everyone knew the loss cost the Broncos and the WAC a large sum of money. The New York Times stopped to figure out how much: $8 million. "The Rose Bowl, like other Bowl Championship Series games, touts a per-team payout of $17 million," Times reporter John Branch writes. "For teams like Boise State and others in one of the five conferences without an automatic bid, the payout is $12 million, Benson said. Boise State figured to gain $3 million, the other WAC teams would have split $5 million, and the four other second-tier conferences would have split $4 million." Branch also notes that Boise State coach Chris Petersen would have earned a $125,000 bonus for making it to a BCS game. If you want to say kicker Kyle Brotzman lost the game for the Broncos, that's your prerogative, but I'd suggest you read this book, which will change your mind like it did mine when I read it years ago. And if you're too good to read a 22-year-old book, you deserve to think Brotzman lost the game for BSU.
2. Meanwhile Utah, Boise State's opponent in the MAACO Bowl, is considering a new social media policy after one of its players turned to Twitter to taunt the Broncos. Utes receiver DeVonte Christopher tweeted, "I can't wait to get out here wit these Boise State or should I say Girlse State they a bunch of cheerleaders...lol." Coach Kyle Whittingham said he and Christopher had had "several conversations" about Christopher's ill-considered tweet. "Girlse?" Seriously? Bet they've never heard that before.

Gingerbread feature: Download manager
Another updated feature that comes to us with Gingerbread is the download manager. Just like a download manager on your computer, or the one built into your computer's web browser, it's designed to help you keep track of things you come across on the web that are worth downloading and saving. For many of us, downloaded files -- whether they be installable apps, pictures (like our pal Lloyd), or other documents -- can build up, and having one centralized place to view them all, sorted by history or size, is quite the valuable tool. You can see a short video after the break that shows the download manager in action.

Air Jordan Cool Grey XIs Have Sneaker World Buzzing
Filed under: Sports Business and Media, Sneakers
In 2001, the XIs were brought back in the first Cool Grey Retro XIs and released on a limited basis. The shoe featured stylish grey uppers with patent leather around the base, while the white midsole contrasted and exposed the grey leather and clear outsole.
The new Cool Grey XIs (pictured) follow the 2001 edition's style, with a few tweaks. The patent leather upper is rounded out with a ballistic nylon for a supportive fit, while the clear encapsulated air-sole adds cushioning around the base. The herringbone outsole generates traction on the hardwood, while mixing things up stylistically with the addition of the blue-tinted rubber outer.
Even more than the aesthetics, the rarity of the Cool Grey colorway is certainly one of the principal driving factors in the mega-high demand. With a limited release and a price tag reading $175, the Retro XIs are sure to become collectibles.

Donald Fehr Reportedly Will Be Named New NHLPA Boss
Filed under: NHL Fans, NHL Economics, Sports Business and Media
Fehr ran the baseball union for 26 years, and he will replace Paul Kelly, who was abruptly fired in 2009 and now runs College Hockey, Inc., an organization designed to promote and expand U.S. college hockey.
The appointment doesn't require a full vote of the union membership, but the process was a bit slower than expected because Fehr wanted to get every NHL player's input.
The league and players extended the already-existing collective bargaining agreement through the 2012-13 season, giving Fehr and his staff more time to get settled in before what could be another in a long series of contentious battles between NHL owners and players.
TSN notes that Fehr is considered a popular choice among NHL players.

Matt Damon's 'True Grit' Character Has No Beef With Shia LaBeouf
The man behind Texas goofball LaBoeuf also had a hand in LaBeouf's career -- coincidence?
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz
Matt Damon in "True Grit"
Photo: Paramount Pictures
In "True Grit," the upcoming and much-buzzed about western from the Coen brothers, Matt Damon gets a chance to showcase his playful, comedic side via his character, LaBoeuf, pronounced "La Beef."
Given the familiar-ish spelling of the character's name and Damon's history in working with actor Shia LaBeouf — one of his first non-child-actor roles was in "The Battle of Shaker Heights, the feature film made from Damon and Ben Affleck's "Project Greenlight" series for HBO — we jokingly asked him if the goofball Texas ranger LaBoeuf in "True Grit," bears any resemblance or relation to "Transformers" star LaBeouf (pronounced "La Buff").
"Not unless he's changing his pronunciation to 'Le Beef,' " Damon joked back. "I thought it was pronounced 'La Buff' when I first saw it, but the book is very clear it's pronounced 'Le Beef.' "
Fair enough. Speaking of LaBeouf (which really does mean "the beef" in French), we wondered if Damon feels responsible for any of the blockbuster success the star has achieved thus far in his career.
"I wish I could take responsibility for his career," Damon said of Shia, who actually got his start on the Disney Channel's "Even Stevens." "He's had a terrific career and he's a terrific actor. We thought that when we saw him on 'Project Greenlight.' We thought, 'Wow, who is this kid?' I'm very happy to see everything that's happened to him; he's a terrific guy."
Perhaps there is a Damon/LaBeouf project in the future? Or better yet, a LaBeouf/LaBoeuf "Funny or Die" video/parody?
Check out everything we've got on "True Grit."

Average MLB Salary Tops $3M in 2010
Filed under: MLB Biz, Sports Business and Media
The 912 players in the big leagues before rosters expanded in September averaged $3,014,572, the Major League Baseball Players Association said Monday. The average rose 0.6 percent from last year's $2,996,106, the smallest increase since a 2.5 percent drop in 2004.
The union's opening-day average first reached $3 million in 2007, but the average drops during the season as veterans are released and replaced by younger players earning far less. The union's average at the start of this season was $3,340,133.
The New York Yankees had the highest final average at $7,604,937, down slightly from $7,663,351 when they won the World Series in 2009. Philadelphia rose from eighth to second at $5,662,551.
Boston ($4,821,016) remained third, and the Chicago White Sox ($4,580,868) climbed from 12th to fourth followed by the Chicago Cubs ($4,107,304), who dropped from second. Houston ($1,931,793) slid from 11th to 22nd.

'Family Guy' Exclusive: Nine Minutes Of 'Star Wars' Parody 'It's A Trap!'
'It's definitely the most visually stunning of all of the ones we've done,' creator Seth MacFarlane tells MTV News.
By Eric Ditzian
Brian, Peter and Lois Griffin in "Family Guy: It's A Trap!"
Photo: Fox
Back at San Diego Comic-Con this summer, "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane showed off a first-look at "It's a Trap!," the final installment in the animated series' parodies of the "Star Wars" franchise. But unless you were lucky enough to be sitting in those hallowed, geek-filled halls, you've barely seen anything from the hour-long episode, which tweaks "Return of the Jedi" to hilarious effect.
That's why MTV News is happy to present nine minutes from "It's a Trap," which hits DVD and Blu-ray Tuesday. "It's more of exactly the same kind of jokes you've seen in the other two," MacFarlane deadpanned in a Comic-Con chat with us. "So if you like those, this is the same and you'll enjoy it just as much."
That's just a bit of an understatement, but it's also true: The third episode is no letdown from the first two. Once again, young Chris Griffin plays Luke Skywalker. He's joined by Peter as Han Solo, Lois as Princess Leia, Brian as Chewbacca, Stewie as Darth Vader and all manner of other "Family Guy" characters in various roles. (Paraplegic Joe as Jabba the Hut? Well played!)
"It's a Trap!" begins exactly as the episodes that preceded it, with a LOL-tastic take on the "Star Wars" franchise's iconic opening crawl: "Luke Skywalker has returned to his home planet of Tatooine in order to — okay, you know what, we don't care. We were thinking of not even doing this one. Fox made us do it ... I'm sorry. I took a muscle relaxer earlier and it's kicking in."
From there it's off to the Death Star. We see Solo getting a fart-filled release from his carbonite prison, Meg Griffin as the multi-tentacled sarlacc beast, a Stormtrooper bicycle chase, and appearances from "American Dad!" characters Roger the alien and Klaus the fish in "Jedi" character. Random cameos include Pee-wee Herman, Ted Knight ripped from "Caddyshack" footage and the boogie-woogie piano stylings of Ray Charles. The whole production has never looked better. As MacFarlane explained, "It's definitely the most visually stunning of all of the ones we've done."
Just don't expect the "Family Guy" guys to attack the three newest "Star Wars" flicks. Says MacFarlane, "I would rather chew broken glass."
