'Transformers' Director Michael Bay Calls 3-D A 'Technical Nightmare'

'I've slowed down my style on this one,' he tells MTV News of adjusting to 3-D for 'Dark of the Moon.'
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Toward the end of February of last year, as James Cameron's "Avatar" was crossing the $700 million mark at the domestic box office on its way to a record-shattering worldwide total, "Transformers" director Michael Bay was still not convinced that 3-D was the true future of popcorn moviemaking.

"I've seen some tests that look great on other movies. I just want to see how it looks on my footage... in terms of a lot of real stuff coming out of the frame, real dirt, real complicated little particles coming towards the lens," he said at the time by way of revealing that he was considering a 3-D treatment for the third installment of his alien robot franchise.

The fact that he'd even arrived at such a testing phase is a credit both to Cameron and "Transformers" exec producer Stephen Spielberg. "Jim Cameron, he's like, 'Mike, you got to do it in 3-D,' " Bay told MTV News recently. "Stephen Spielberg, he says, 'Michael, you should do this in 3-D,' and I'm like, 'I don't know about the technology.' "

In the end, Bay became convinced that the tech was solid. For "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," he shot, by his own estimation, 60 percent of the finished film using 3-D cameras, another 15 percent consisting of all-digital 3-D shots and 25 percent footage converted from two dimensions to three. And while the director remains happy with the results, he did not mince words in talking about the challenges of working with 3-D cameras.

"It's hard with my style of shooting and taking [a camera] and strapping it to guys who are skydiving off buildings, and helmet cams," he said. "It's a technical nightmare. You don't even want to tell your viewers how technically complicated this stuff is."

To accommodate the limitations of a 3-D presentation, Bay ended up adjusting his often-kinetic approach to filmmaking. "I've slowed down my style on this one," he explained. "There are longer shots, there are evolving shots, some shots are 45 seconds long, where you're going in and through things. Where people say, 'Oh, I can't watch action with 3-D,' it's where 3-D was done poorly and your eye goes in and out, and if it jumps fast, it's when you get bad 3-D, because it screws with your head. Shot by shot, we're transitioning the viewer. You can really feel the action in this. It's much more experiential."

'Cars 2': The Reviews Are In!

Critics enjoy the visual ride but not much else about Pixar's latest.
By Eric Ditzian

Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) and Mater (voiced by Larry the Cable Guy) in "Cars 2"
Photo: Disney

Animated films, much like the big-screen work of Adam Sandler, are so often review-proof. "Hop" didn't give a hoot that critics eviscerated the Easter Bunny tale, opening to $37.5 million domestically on its way to a $176.8 million worldwide total. And hey, "Grown Ups" and "Just Go With It" were two of the most savagely critiqued comedies in recent memory, yet each one deposited a couple hundred million dollars in Sandler's already astonishing box-office pot of gold.

So does it really matter that critics have flagged "Cars 2," Pixar's latest offering and its first sequel outside the "Toy Story" franchise, for a dizzying array of cinematic violations? Nope. The CGI flick is poised to race away with around $65 million this weekend. Kids, and the parents who hold their hands on the way to the theater, will be leading the charge. And they won't care at all that reviewers have harrumphed at the convoluted storytelling, because they'll be too busy gawking at what even critics admit are top-notch visuals.

But if you're old enough to read this, perhaps you might care. And thus we present a deep dive into the "Cars 2" reviews:

The Story
"Who decided to make Larry the Cable Guy the star? I don't know, but his Mater, the dopey, good-hearted tow truck from the first 'Cars,' is the focus of the sequel, which is sort of like basing a fourth 'Toy Story' on Slinky Dog. The star of 'Witless Protection,' among other delights, can only carry a film so far. This time out, Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is goaded, with Mater's help, into entering the World Grand Prix to face the cocky Francesco Bernoulli (John Turturro). ... Mater somehow gets himself involved in international espionage. Someone is trying to sabotage the Grand Prix, and spies Finn McMissle (Michael Caine) and Holley Shiftwell (Emily Mortimer) are trying to figure out who and why. Mistaking Mater for a fellow spy — the idiot act is flawless, Finn tells him — Mater is soon wearing disguises and working undercover, haplessly bumbling his way to success." — Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic

The Storytelling
" 'Cars 2' plays out like two scripts that have been stapled together. Scenes from one script alternate with scenes from the other, and there are separate batches of characters in the U.S., Italy and England, most of whom don't have much to do (every movie could use more of Bonnie Hunt, who voices Lightning's girlfriend, but that's especially true of this movie). The testing of the Mater/Lightning friendship has charm and gives 'Cars 2' what heart it has, but the film spends most of its time on the spy plot, which is not terribly involving." — Chris Hewitt, St. Paul Pioneer Press

The Visuals
"Every frame is rendered so beautifully you wish you could pause it: the uncanny wetness of the ocean waves as Finn performs a daring oil-rig maneuver; the glowing lights of nighttime Paris; the sparkling sunshine on Corsica streets as cars zoom through; the gentle gray mists of London. (Note, though, that the 3-D effects are very subtle; my guess is that you wouldn't miss a thing by seeing this movie in 2-D.)" — Moira Macdonald, Seattle Times

The Missteps
"The tone and emphasis of 'Cars 2' veers off course from the start. Too many guns, for one thing. The whole thing is too weapons-dependent to be charming. There's plenty to watch here, and preteens who found the first 'Cars' a bit pokey won't have the same reaction to this frenetic, globe-trotting follow-up. But I got little pleasure from seeing these cars (plus boats, and a plane) thrown into the spy thriller genre. It's an intriguing story risk at best, a protracted stunt at worst. The greatest Pixar films have sampled, free-form, an unpredictable variety of moods and styles. Here the mash-ups refuse to jell, and even Michael Giacchino's score sounds like someone less talented than Michael Giacchino composed it." — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

The Final Word
" 'Cars 2' is probably the slightest of Pixar's films — it sort of plays like an espionage-driven episode of the '60s 'Speed Racer' cartoon, only with the Mach 5 doing all the talking in a universe eerily devoid of humans. But if it's going to be diet Pixar, at least it's action-packed diet Pixar — with overwhelming, detail-choked production design that occasionally had my jaw lowering like a forklift." — Michael Russell, Oregonian

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Says 'Transformers' Will Be First 3-D Movie She's Seen

'I have never seen a movie in 3-D,' 'Dark of the Moon' actress reveals to MTV News.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

In case you need more reason to go see "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" this week, in addition to crazy amped-up action and a new lovely leading lady, the third robot-tastic installment is in 3-D. And it wasn't converted in postproduction, like a few of the recent 3-D films out there. Director Michael Bay insisted that his first foray into the three-dimensional medium be as authentic and technologically advanced as possible.

Lately there has definitely been a bit of 3-D fatigue in the air. When MTV News caught up with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley at the film's worldwide premiere in Moscow recently, we asked for her thoughts on the 3-D element of "Dark of the Moon."

"I will be the judge of that after I see this film, because I have never seen a movie in 3-D," she revealed. "When Michael told me it was going to be in 3-D, I said, 'Right, I'm going to wait,' and now we're here, we're at the premiere stage and I'm going to wait until [I'm in] London and see it with my family."

So when Whiteley finally watches the 3-D version of the film with her family and friends, will she be watching herself on the big screen or watching her family's reactions?

"I'm going to be watching them watching me," she said with a laugh.

Bay has made a big deal of the fact that he initially had a lot of reservations about 3-D, explaining that his buddy director James Cameron finally convinced him to go for it with this film.

"[James Cameron], at the last minute, goes, 'Mike, come on,' " Bay recalled, imitating the "Avatar" director's enthusiasm with a slightly deep and gravelly inflection in his voice. "This is like my idol. He goes, 'Mike, come on, we've done everything.' I'm thinking, 'I haven't done everything.' "

Cameron pushed him to try out this "new toy," and despite all the headaches that were added to the filmmaking process with shooting in 3-D, he's glad he did it.

"3-D, it's pretty great when you see these robots interact in the space," Bay said.

Chinese search giant Baidu developing their own flavor of Android?

 Baidu

According to the Chinese site TechWeb, the Chinese search company Baidu is developing their own version of Android called "Qiushi", and it will be launched before the end of 2011.  Baidu neither confirms or denies these rumors, saying only that Qiushi is simply a way to offer mobile advertising.  China is a huge market, one that everyone wants to get a strong foothold in.  They also already have two Android variants being sold on mobile devices -- MIUI (yes, the same MIUI that's familiar to many an Android hacker) and DianxinOS.  This could be something a bit different, as you have the name (and the capital) of a highly successful tech corporation behind the development and distribution.  If the rumors pan out, things could get very interesting in China at the mobile OS front.

'Transformers' Stars Joke That Stunts Hurt Their Guy Parts

'I don't like the wires,' Shia LaBeouf says, breaking down the dangers of wearing a harness.
By Kara Warner

Shia LaBeouf in "Transformers: Dark of the Moon"
Photo: Jaimie Trueblood

If there's one thing audiences can count on going into a Michael Bay-directed "Transformers" movie, it's that there will be action, action and ... more action. With each new installment, Bay has upped the ante, delivering crazier robot fights and more death-defying stunt work. And while those stunt sequences are fascinating to watch, they come with a certain amount of strain and stress for the actors who perform them.

Speaking specifically of the wire work required of his cast during filming of the third installment, "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," Bay has previously joked that star Shia LaBeouf was a "grump" about working in harnesses. So we asked LaBeouf to address that point during a recent sit-down. His detailed explanation was both highly technical and hilarious.

"Yeah, I don't like the wires," LaBeouf admitted to MTV News. "Really, you can ask any man, like if I were to ask you, sir," Labeouf said, gesturing to the gentleman manning the camera in the background. "Would you like me to take my shoelace off, tie it around your nuts and then hang it from a chandelier on the ceiling?" he deadpanned. "And then while you're up there hanging from your testicles, I need you to scream, 'Optimus!' which makes the testicle condense inside of the shoelace vise. Would you enjoy that, sir?" LaBeouf said with a smile.

New leading lady Rosie Huntington-Whiteley also weighed in on the subject, insisting that harnesses aren't a picnic for the ladies either.

"I don't think I was originally supposed to go up in the harness," Whiteley said of her fateful day suspended in the air. "I was on set watching my stunt double do her thing; she was sliding down this 100-foot [mobile set] that was at a 40-degree angle on what was basically a skateboard, headfirst. All of the sudden Michael [Bay] says, 'OK, get Rosie in the harness!' They thrust this man's harness at me," she recalled. "Which is placed to be in all the wrong places for a woman's body and is excruciatingly painful for three hours," she added. "All the things cut into the wrong places, put pressure on the wrong bits. Whatever it does to a man, it also does to a woman."

LaBeouf and Whiteley's co-star Tyrese Gibson, however, said there's one surefire way to make wire work less painful: butt meat.

"Thank God I have a bigger ass so when you put the harness on, the ass is able to help you stay away from the front part," he explained. "It kind of balances things out a little bit. When your ass is flat and you have to have it going over the front, it is a bad day in America," Gibson said. "It's really nothing any of us can do about that. We can, say, do lunges, get on the StairMaster that week, but it's not going to give you that real butt meat that you need to help you to get through the situation," he said. "So thank you, Mom, for passing on the booty meat to help me get through this."

Tom Cruise Is 'Astonishing' In 'Rock Of Ages,' Julianne Hough Says

'I'm not kidding, the guy can sing,' the 'Dancing With the Stars' alum tells MTV News.
By Christina Garibaldi

On Friday, Tom Cruise posted a photo of himself on his website as '80s rocker Stacee Jaxx, for his role in the big-screen adaptation of the Broadway musical "Rock of Ages." Cruise, who is shirtless in the photo, is sporting long hair and tattoos for his character, who will belt out '80s classics such as Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive," Scorpions' "Rock You Like a Hurricane" and a group performance of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'."

Yet, the question on everyone's mind is: Can he sing? Well, according to co-star Julianne Hough, the answer is yes.

"I'm not kidding, the guy can sing," Hough told MTV News on Monday (June 20) at the CESAR Canine Cuisine and American Humane Association's voting kickoff for the Hero Dog Awards. "The guy can dance, the guy obviously can act. I mean, he can do it all, and he does it all very well."

Yet, unfortunately for Hough, she wasn't on set the first day Cruise transformed into character, but that doesn't mean she didn't hear all about it.

"I wasn't there for the first day of shooting for his stuff, but I just got people emailing me, like, 'Oh my gosh,' chills, standing ovation, holy crap, the crew was blown away," Hough gushed. "And I'm like, 'I missed it! What the heck?' So, he's astonishing."

However, the "Dancing With the Stars" alum did get to hear Cruise's singing voice, and she had to agree with the rest of the crew: He is the real deal.

"Yeah, oh yeah, it's ridiculous." Hough said. "There are no words to describe how amazing Tom is. I mean, he's so in it."

Hough, who wraps shooting on "Rock of Ages" in August, plays lead character Sherrie Christian alongside an all-star cast, including Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand and Mary J. Blige.

"It's hilarious. None of us take each other seriously, because we are all decked out, '80s-style." Hough said of being on set. "Alec Baldwin is wearing a blond wig. I mean, having Russell Brand on set is a hoot in itself. We are literally having the time of our lives."

Yet, it hasn't all been fun on set: Hough had to get down and dirty for a love scene with co-star Diego Boneta, but it's not what you think.

"We did a shoot, a very, very romantic scene between Diego, who is my co-star, on top of a landfill," Hough revealed. "So we had to be very romantic and make out, and all we could smell is nastiness and garbage. Nothing says romance like garbage."

Check out everything we've got on "Rock of Ages."

Harry Potter, Severus Snape Soar In Early World Cup Voting

Hermione Granger is also dominating in the first round of the MTV News tournament.
By Eric Ditzian

Don't pooh-pooh Filius Flitwick! That's just one of the lessons coming into focus little more than 24 hours into the epic showdown we call the "Harry Potter" World Cup.

Though the diminutive master of Charms nabbed just a 10 seed in our monthlong tournament, in which fans have been voting online to choose the greatest character in the fantasy franchise, Professor Flitwick has raced out to a commanding first-round lead over his fellow Hogwarts colleague, and number-seven seed, Sybill Trelawney. But voting in the initial round doesn't close until midnight on Monday, meaning there's more than enough time for Trelawney fans to divine a whole lot of votes in her honor.

Other contests seem less prone to an upset. Honestly, what are the chances Harry Potter himself, facing off against Dark Arts devotee Quirinus Quirrell, gets an unexpected first-round ouster from the World Cup? As of this writing, the boy wizard has wrangled more than 95 percent of the vote. His pal Hermione Granger, meanwhile, has garnered more than 98 percent of the vote in her battle with often-salacious journalist Rita Skeeter.

See photos of all of the "Potter" World Cup players.

But that was all to be expected. Early voting has also shown us some characters that could become Cinderella stories. Dobby the House Elf, the adorable rascal who made the ultimate sacrifice to save Harry and company, shot out to a maybe-we-should-call-it-now lead over Gryffindor half-blood Dean Thomas. Maybe now it's time for Dobby, who's always been the servant until now, to lead a fan-supported charge. Yet the floppy-eared elf could well run up against Severus Snape, who himself is dominating a first-round matchup with Death Eater spawn Vincent Crabbe, in the Sweet 16.

Snape, as "Potter" buffs know, has one of the most complex and satisfying character arcs in the entire series. Only Dobby, we presume, stands between him and an Elite Eight showdown with Harry. That's the main action in the Privet Drive quadrant of the bracket. Over in Godric's Hollow, while Hermione is busy wiping the floor with Rita, the phoenix Fawkes is straight up embarrassing poor Nearly Headless Nick. But voting in Albus Dumbledore's game hasn't even started. If you ask us, anyone who thinks someone like Dark Arts defender Remus Lupin is going to stand in the way of a Hermione vs. Dumbledore Elite Eight face off is crazy.

See the full bracket and vote!

Things haven't even gotten started on the other side of the bracket. There's a whole lot of Weasley brawling going on in the Hogsmeade section, not only with Ron securing the top seed but with Arthur cruelly conjuring up a war with his son Percy. But all that may become background noise once Cedric Diggory (memorably, if briefly, portrayed onscreen by one Robert Pattinson) gets in on the action. Even Ron Weasley, he who won the heart of Hermione, might not be able to take down the "Twilight" heartthrob. Voting kicks off Wednesday.

And then in Diagon Alley, we find perhaps the tournament's most competitive corner. Count 'em off: Lord Voldemort, Draco Malfoy (whose Tom Felton has collected two straight MTV Movie Award Best Villain wins), Sirius Black and his murderer, Bellatrix Lestrange. About the only thing we can predict at this point is that Lord V is going to freaking destroy Moaning Myrtle, who might need a new nickname soon. Voting in these matches begins on Thursday.

Who is the best "Harry Potter" character of all time? The "Harry Potter" World Cup will find out! Voting is going on now over on the MTV Movies Blog, and you can also get the debate going on Twitter with the hashtag #mtvpottercup.

Droid Incredible 2 custom ROMs now appearing, first up -- Incredibly Debloated v1.0

Droid Incredible 2

It was only a few days ago that S-OFF was achieved on the Droid Incredible 2. That of course, left the doors open for some custom ROMs to be built for the device and as such we're now starting to see them appear in the Android Central forums. The Incredibly Debloated v1.0 ROM comes to us from xgunther and even comes in two flavors currently -- one with a stock kernel and one with your selection of an overclocked kernel.

As they name would suggest, bloat on these ROMS has been removed and no matter which you decide to roll with you'll be getting a completely bloat-free, zip-aligned, deodexed and completely rooted ROM and that to us sounds just fabulous. Looking for more details? Hit the link below.

Cut the Rope officially released for Android, available on GetJar

Cut the Rope for AndroidCut the Rope for Android

The wait is over. The hints are done. Cut the Rope has been released for Android, and it's available exclusively on GetJar. If you've yet to play it, it's a simple premise: A piece of candy dangles from a rope. Your job is to cut the rope and drop the candy into the little frog-thingy's mouth (his name's Om Nom, by the way). Sounds simple enough -- and the game play is so intuitive, my 4-year-old loves this thing -- but the latter levels can be a bit tricky. And speaking of levels, there are 175 of them, so you'll be busy for a while.

Give it a whirl. For the low, low price of free, you can't go wrong. Full press release is after the break.
