'Cowboys & Aliens' Nude Scene 'Crazy,' Olivia Wilde Says

Co-star Daniel Craig had to 'look me up and down,' actress explains.
By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Eric Ditzian

Olivia Wilde might have been covered in dust and dirt while shooting "Cowboys & Aliens," but that didn't make shooting a mostly nude scene in front of her co-star Daniel Craig any less awkward.

"It was kind of strange because I was half-naked in front of a bunch of people, including the crew, a bunch of Apache warriors, a bunch of cowboys, and Daniel Craig, who I had to stand in front of basically naked," Wilde explained to MTV News. "He had to take a moment to sort of look me up and down before covering me in a blanket. And I was like, this is crazy."

It didn't help that after the long night of shooting, Wilde and the rest of the "Cowboys & Aliens" cast had to take an overnight flight to San Diego Comic-Con to make their Hall H presentation. So if fans remember her being a little frazzled, it probably has something to do with the fact Wilde had no sleep after filming a scene in which she was partially nude for the majority of it.

As fans will find out come Friday's release of "Cowboys & Aliens," the scene Wilde is talking about — which has been teased in the film's many trailers — happens at the climax. She said filming the sequence was an "honor" because it is such an important moment in the movie.

"It was really exciting because we knew we were creating something kind of spectacular in that scene," Wilde said. "It was a really cool effect happening, as people will see."

The actress said she didn't wear much make-up and required little hairstyling while filming because the style of the flick was "very bare." She said it was a very dirty shoot, and not just because she was almost naked.

"We were literally dirty because we were riding all day long out in the desert, and you get very dirty. But the dirtier everybody looked, the hotter they looked. It was a really good look, I think," she said.

"The people in the Old West were very dirty. The thing that's unrealistic about our movie is all our teeth: We have good teeth; they didn't have good teeth. So, logic police will call BS on that."

'Cowboys & Aliens': The Reviews Are In!

Western meets sci-fi flick is full of 'nifty scenes,' but 'unappealing' overall, critics say.
By Terri Schwartz

With a concept as inspired as "Cowboys & Aliens" and an A-list cast that brings together James Bond and Indiana Jones themselves, it's hard to imagine what could possibly have gone wrong between bringing the movie from the production room to the big screen. MTV's Splash Page blog found a lot to love about the movie despite its flaws, but other critics have not been so kind.

Maybe it was the fact that director Jon Favreau took the summer blockbuster too seriously. Fans hoping for a tongue-in-cheek mash-up of a Western and an alien movie are in for a straight-laced action flick without a lot of room for humor, like in Favreau's "Iron Man" films. Even the movie's charismatic leads couldn't rescue "Cowboys & Aliens" from its identity crisis, critics are saying.

Still, there was plenty to love about the movie as well. "Cowboys & Aliens" is certainly a fun ride to take this summer, so before you head to the multiplex this weekend, take a gander at the "Cowboys & Aliens" reviews we lassoed up for you.

The Story "The whole aliens-on-the-frontier incongruity never comes to much, really. There are nifty scenes, like the horseback riders battling silvery skeletal airplanes, but what 'Cowboys & Aliens' lacks is a good story. Basically, the characters — [Daniel] Craig's enigmatic outlaw, [Harrison] Ford's scowling boss, a tribe of Apache — must put aside their differences to form a posse and defeat the invaders. Who do we care about onscreen? For all of Craig's edgy charisma, no one. 'Cowboys & Aliens' has fun moments, but it's a plodding entertainment because it mostly tastes like leftovers." — Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

The Leading Men "In Daniel Craig, the movie has what feels awfully like the second coming of Steve McQueen. Maybe it's the laser blue eyes under the broad forehead, or the laconic refusal to speak except when absolutely necessary, but Craig has a presence here that feels downright mythic. ... The chance to be as mean as he wants to be energizes [Ford], whose storied crankiness finally finds a home. It's a character part, and you can sense Ford's relief at letting another man shoulder the load. Consciously or not, there's a generational passing of the baton just under this movie's surface, and it helps immensely that Craig's up to the task." — Ty Burr, The Boston Globe

The Cowboys and the Aliens "In Hollywood's ancient prime, maybe a third of all movies were Westerns. But those days are as dead as the horse-mounted cavalry; in the past 30 years, the genre has been resuscitated only when some powerful director wanted to make a movie like the ones he grew up loving. So 'Cowboys & Aliens' has got to get to the aliens pretty damn quick. Even here, Favreau and his crew sprinkle a few memorable moments: the aliens' low-flying scout planes, looking like 10-winged titanium dragonflies and lassoing the townspeople for abduction; a desert vision of an upside-down steamship, which momentarily summons the ghost of Werner Herzog's 'Fitzcarraldo'; and the recurring image of Craig retrieving his cowboy hat, whether he's fighting off human varmints or escaping from the aliens' stronghold. A man ain't a man without his Stetson." — Richard Corliss, Time

The Concept "Cowboys versus aliens is a concept that may make you smile in anticipation, but wipe that smile off your face before buying your ticket, because the film takes its subject seriously — deadly seriously in the case of Harrison Ford, who plays a nasty rancher with the snarls and scowls that have become his trademarks, as if in penance for being so charming in the past. One interesting twist has a posse of cowboys teaming up with the Apaches they fear in order to vanquish the aliens, but the storytelling, punctuated by incoherent flashbacks, is often inscrutable." — Joe Morgenstern, The Wall Street Journal

The Final Word "A leaden mash-up of western and science-fiction elements that ends up noisy, grotesque and unappealing, this Jon Favreau-directed film features five producers (including Brian Grazer and Ron Howard), six executive producers (Steven Spielberg and Ryan Kavanaugh among them) and six credited writers, led by 'Star Trek' rebooters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and 'Lost's' Damon Lindelof. No wonder the film plays like a business deal more than a motion picture. Listed as a producer, not a writer, is Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, whose concept for the original graphic novel inspired the film. That's right, 'Cowboys' doesn't even retell the story the graphic novel does; it sets out on its own. This is not a satisfying journey." — Kenneth Turan, The Los Angeles Times

'Breaking Dawn' Sex Scene Was 'Kind Of Fun' For Bill Condon

'They are so comfortable with each other,' director says of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.
By Tom Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

"Twilight" fans gearing up for the franchise's last two films already have the cast and crew's word that the much-discussed wedding and birth scenes will be everything they've imagined since reading Stephenie Meyer's "Breaking Dawn." But what about porting the book's passionate sex scene from page to screen?

When MTV News caught up with director Bill Condon at Comic-Con, he was happy to report that shooting in Brazil was a breeze. "It was kind of fun!" he told us. Apparently Stewart and Pattinson's electric onscreen chemistry was enough to diffuse any and all off-screen awkwardness among cast and crew.

"They are so comfortable with each other," Condon said. "They made the whole thing ... it was kind of fun. Those things are always a little strange. They get to be weirdly technical at certain points."

Stewart and Pattinson's realistic closeness comes as no surprise, given that rumors about their real-life relationship have been circulating since the initial "Twilight" film hit theaters in 2008.

"They managed to put all that aside and turn it into something. That's a very real moment," he noted.

For his part, Pattinson told fans at Comic-Con that there were some not-so-romantic moments during the shoot in Brazil.

"Brazil was amazing," Pattinson said. "It was really amazing the day we got there, and really beautiful and warm and everything you'd expect. Then it suddenly, for the remainder of the shoot, was not only raining but like hurricane storms. ... It was kind of like having a honeymoon in England. We were playing board games instead of, like, making love on the beach."

'Breaking Dawn' Didn't 'Make Sense' For James Franco, Director Says

'For a moment it was like, what could James Franco play that doesn't feel like 'Where's Waldo?' ' Bill Condon jokes.
By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Josh Horowitz and Bill Condon
Photo: MTV News

Picture in your mind James Franco sparkling in the sunlight with red vampire eyes, because director Bill Condon told MTV that the actor almost (sort of) was cast in "Breaking Dawn."

The "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" star has long been lamenting the fact that he could not be a part of the "Twilight" film series, of which he has admitted to being a big fan. During an appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" in December, Franco even admitted that he petitioned for a role in the "Breaking Dawn" movies but was turned down.

So when MTV News had a chance to catch up with Condon at San Diego Comic-Con while he was promoting "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1," we couldn't resist asking the director if there was any truth to the rumor Franco has been spreading.

The short answer: There is.

"He told a friend of mine who then sent a message along to me," Condon explained. "For a moment it was like, what could James Franco play that doesn't feel like 'Where's Waldo?' I really thought about it for a second, and nothing made sense."

The only roles open to Franco would have been as one of the new vampires in the covens who come to support the Cullens against the Volturi, and Condon felt that between Franco's star power and his busy schedule, it would not have been a good fit.

"I think he thinks this somehow involves some big rejection of the idea. It wasn't that," Condon explained. "If it had made sense, and frankly if I had called and said 'do you want to play that vampire from that country,' it would have involved hanging around for two months in a scene with 80 people, and I don't know if he really would have wanted to do it."

Sharp FX Plus shows off a bit more with AT&T branding

Sharp FX Plus

No, you are not going crazy, pictured above is not the Sidekick 4G, but instead the Sharp FX Plus, which may soon be AT&T-bound. A few days ago we saw some shots of a WalMart ad that showed off the device, but unfortunately it did not give a release date. The FX Plus will launch with Android 2.2, on a 3.2 inch screen powered by a 600mHz processor with 512MB of RAM. Pricing and release dates are still uncertain at this time, but this does appear to be one of AT&T's lower end offerings, which should put it at quite an affordable price. 'Avengers' Star Clark Gregg Backs Marvel TV Show

'S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Coulson really lend themselves to a TV show,' actor says about his 'Iron Man' and 'Thor' character.
By Aubrey Sitterson

Clark Gregg
Photo: Jim Spellman/ WireImage

Though you might not know him by name, if you've seen many of Marvel's recent superhero flicks, chances are you'll recognize Clark Gregg. The actor plays Agent Coulson in three Marvel movies — "Iron Man," "Iron Man 2" and "Thor" — and will reprise the role in next summer's "The Avengers."

Coulson is one of the few prominent roles in Marvel's expanding cinematic universe that isn't based on a pre-existing comic book character. Appearing first in "Iron Man," Coulson is an agent of the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, better known by the acronym S.H.I.E.L.D., and has been seen trying to wrangle both Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark as well as Chris Hemsworth's Thor, with a bureaucratic demeanor frequently played for laughs.

In an interview with MTV News, Gregg discussed the future of his silver-screen character in regard to some future television appearances. "It's been revealed today that I'm already doing 'Ultimate [Spider-Man],' " the actor explained, "which is about Spider-Man and a couple other soon-to-be-released Marvel superheroes who are hiding out undercover in a high school in New York, and Agent Coulson is hiding out as their principal, keeping an eye on them and taking things way too seriously."

Even more exciting, however, was the mention of a potential future television show focused on S.H.I.E.L.D., the premiere global peacekeeping force in the Marvel Universe — like an international "X-Files" for superheroes. While a S.H.I.E.L.D. series hasn't been formally announced, the idea clearly appeals to Gregg.

"In a lot of ways, S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Coulson really lend themselves to a TV show because it's normal people," Coulson said. "It's real people dealing with extraordinary things."

Would you watch a S.H.I.E.L.D. television series? Tell us below!

'Ant-Man' Movie Wouldn't Just Be For 'Avengers' Experts, Director Says

Edgar Wright says he's just completed a third draft of the script for the Marvel movie.
By Aubrey Sitterson, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images

With "Captain America: The First Avenger" grossing over $65 million on its opening weekend and fans already buzzing about next year's "Avengers," Marvel's quickly expanding cinematic universe is as popular as ever. Now, from San Diego Comic-Con 2011 comes news that Marvel Studios might finally be moving ahead on a long-awaited release: Edgar Wright's "Ant-Man."

The "Shaun of the Dead" and "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" director has been talking about taking on Marvel's smallest superhero since at least 2007, promising a live-action film that would blend humor with action and would include two different Ant-Men: Henry Pym and Scott Lang.

In the Marvel Comics source material, both characters make use of a special formula and suit that allows them to shrink, as well as a high-tech helmet that facilitates communication with ants and other insects. "Ant-Man" is said to feature flashbacks of the original hero, Pym, as well as scenes of his successor, Lang, in the present day. Now, after years of infrequent updates and stalled production, things are finally looking up for "Ant-Man."

"Since February, we've done two drafts of the script, and we just handed in a third draft on Monday," Wright told MTV News. The director is co-writing the film with Joe Cornish, whose "Attack the Block" (a British alien-invasion movie starring frequent Wright collaborator Nick Frost and in theaters on July 29) was making waves of its own at Comic-Con. Apparently, some of the hold-up on "Ant-Man" was related to "Attack the Block," as the duo did not complete a second draft until Cornish was finished with his directorial debut.

"The way we wrote the script is for it to be a standalone genre film," Wright said, perhaps indicating that "Ant-Man" would be less explicitly tied to the "Avengers" family of titles like "Captain America: The First Avenger," "Thor" and "Iron Man." Wright continued by explaining his desire to "create an 'in' for people so you don't have to know 50 years of 'Avengers' history to enjoy the movie."

While most recent superhero adaptations have focused on Marvel and DC's "big guns," characters like Batman, Spider-Man, Superman and others, the protagonist of "Ant-Man" will be entirely new to all but the most fervent comic book fans. For Wright and Cornish, however, the freedom that comes with a lesser-known character is a large part of the upcoming project's appeal.

Wright was close-lipped on who he wanted to play the part of the movie's eponymous hero (or heroes), but he did hint that he had someone in mind.

Who would you like to see play Ant-Man? Let us know in the comments below.

Check out everything we've got on "Captain America: The First Avenger."

'Breaking Dawn' Stars Bond Over Game Nights, Grocery Shopping

Ashley Greene and Kellan Lutz laugh to MTV News about spending way too much time at Whole Foods during 'Twilight' downtime.
By Kara Warner with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene
Photo: MTV News

Although the "Twilight" cast has wrapped filming on the franchise's two-part final chapter, "Breaking Dawn," their work together is far from over, considering the very last film won't open in theaters until November 2012 and the young actors have plenty of promotional commitments to fulfill until then.

But having spent so much time together, we wondered whether the castmembers ever get sick of one another. When MTV News caught up with Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, we put that question to them. We also asked the two stars if they had thought about how they'll feel when it's time to say goodbye to the series.

"We're never sick of each other," Lutz said. "You do a project for seven months of your life, and you're really just anxious to get home. I was really excited to see my dogs, [sleep] in my own bed. And then ... we're here at Comic-Con; we're going to be here next year. We have a lot of press and a lot of opportunities to hang out with the fans, and that's what I really look forward to," he admitted.

"Playing my role of Emmett — I love doing these movies — but by no way are we saying goodbye. We have a good couple years ahead of us and, you know, it's just great to work with best friends for so many movies," Lutz continued. "We see a lot of each other and we're all blessed to be working outside of 'Twilight,' but it's nice to all come together again."

Discussing how the best friends spend their downtime during filming, Lutz and Greene revealed that they geek out with board games and grocery shopping.

" 'DanceDance Revolution,' Lutz said. "Hasbro sent a lot of games to Ashley and I, so we have a lot of game nights, which is fun; cook, [watch] movies."

"Grocery shopping at Whole Foods," Greene added of another production activity.

"Which is terrible because I spend hundreds of dollars there by the time [we finish]," Lutz admitted.

"You don't understand," Greene laughed, "They knew us by name there and it was the fun thing [to do], like, 'Wanna go grocery shopping?' Because then we could cook," she explained. "Super, super cool."

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 major software update unveiled Aug 3 in New York

Samsung TouchWiz event

Samsung is holding a press conference to unveil the TouchWiz update for the US Galaxy Tab 10.1  August 3 at the Samsung Experience at Columbus Circle in New York.  They plan a live showing and full demonstration of the new TouchWiz for tablets, and will sideload the update on-site during the briefing, as well as for the general public afterwards.  It's not often that we would want to see a manufacturer UI placed on a stock Android device, but everything we've seen and heard about TouchWiz for the Tab 10.1 makes us think this will be a bit different.  The changes look like they add to the Honeycomb experience in a good way, both in the looks department as well as the functionality.  Besides the changes included in TouchWiz like the mini-apps and live panels, Samsung plans to bring a new Media Hub interface, the Kindle and Amazon Music Cloud player, Words with Friends, and a set of "Enterprise Mobile" solutions.

While the press will be there checking out the demo and sampling the provided lunch, the public can get involved after.  Starting at 1PM and running until 6PM, you can bring your Tab 10.1 in and have the TouchWiz UI flashed by the pros at Samsung.  Samsung warns us that sideloading the update will wipe your Tab, so keep that in mind.  For the rest of us, and those who don't want to lose all their data, the OTA version of the update will be coming soon after.  If you're in New York, you should drop by and check it out.
