'The King's Speech' Conquers The Oscars
Academy picks royal film for its Best Picture, Director and Actor honors.

Director Tom Hooper gave moms watching the 83rd Academy Awards a reason to love his film, and the Oscars gave "The King's Speech" four statues by the end of the night, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay.
"The moral of this story is: Listen to your mother," Hooper told the audience at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre when he accepted his directing prize. The first-time winner and nominee credited his mother for discovering the script, which also won in its category for writer David Seidler.
Seidler's tale, based on King George VI's struggle to overcome a stuttering problem and lead Britain through World War II, entered the night with a royal recipe of previously nominated talent, historical drama and personal strife. When the ballots were finally counted, the classic formula won out, and Hooper, Seidler and star Colin Firth earned a few coveted words to put in front of their names for the rest of their careers: Oscar winner.
Check out backstage photos of the big Oscar winners.
"I have a feeling my career's just peaked," Firth quipped during his acceptance speech. The excitement, however, wasn't enough for him to get funky in front of the crowd. "I'm afraid I have to warn you that I'm experiencing stirrings somewhere in the upper abdominals," he revealed before excusing himself to go backstage and indulge his desire to dance.
"The King's Speech" may not have swept its nomination categories, with Geoffrey Rush losing out to Christian Bale for Best Supporting Actor and Helena Bonham Carter coming up short against Melissa Leo in "The Fighter" for Best Supporting Actress. Likewise, it failed to take home awards in six other categories where it was nominated. But failing to earn Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography won't be the movie's legacy.
"The Social Network" edged out the Oscar night's biggest winner for Best Film Editing and Best Music, and "The Fighter" earning the first statue of the night ensured that the Oscars would be shared this year.
Nevertheless, of the three films, "The King's Speech" will have the most enviable assortment of laurels on its DVD cover when it lands on store shelves.
Stick with MTV News on Oscar night and beyond for red-carpet fashion coverage, analysis of the winners, plus interviews, photos and more from your favorite Hollywood stars!

Mariners Hire Ken Griffey Jr. as Consultant
Filed under: Mariners, MLB Transactions, Sports Business and Media, Spring Training
The announcement was made by club president Chuck Armstrong, one of the few club employees who was already on board when Griffey came up in 1989 as a then-19-year-old to turn around what had been one of the saddest organizations in Major League Baseball.
Griffey forced a trade in Feb. 2000, to the Cincinnati Reds, and he played there for almost a decade before returning to Seattle in 2009, where he had one decent year before things fell apart in 2010.
With Griffey unproductive offensively for the first time in his life in 2010, then-manager Don Wakamatsu used him less and less, and Griffey ultimately opted to leave on June 2, driving home to Florida after deciding to retire.

'Drive Angry': The Reviews Are In!
Should you hit the road with Nicolas Cage? See what the critics have to say.
By Eric Ditzian
David Morse and Nicolas Cage in "Drive Angry"
Photo: Summit Publicity
"Drive Angry" marks three-straight supernatural films for Nicolas Cage, though each could not be more different. "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" was a Disney-driven tale of magical realism. "Season of the Witch" dove into the intersection of medieval black magic and campy B-movie wackiness. And "Drive Angry" literally begins with Cage driving a muscle car straight outta hell with the devil's henchman fast on his heels and doesn't slow down as it splashes blood and fire across the screen.
All three flicks share something else in common: below-average reviews. "Sorcerer's" and "Season" each went on to conjure up lukewarm box-office receipts. Can "Drive Angry" break the spell? Check out what the critics are saying and decide if the new 3-D film is the right choice for you this weekend.
The Story
"[It] may be a bit too slickly self-aware for its own good, but it's also rivetingly paced, outrageously funny and makes retina-scorching use of the new 3D technology. Nicolas Cage is on teeth-baring, eye-rolling form as John Milton (nice), the deceased felon who busts out of hell to track down the Southern death cult who kidnapped his baby granddaughter. Hooking up with mouthy muscle-car-driving white-trash waitress Piper (Amber Heard), Milton sets off in pursuit, all the while attempting to avoid the attentions of Satan's right-hand man, The Accountant (a majestically arch William Fichtner)." -- Tom Huddleston, Time Out
Crazy Nic Cage
"A little respect, if you please, for His Satanic Majesty Nicolas Cage. Nobody goes off the deep end like Nic. Nobody gives better value in bad movies than the sleepy-eyed Oscar winner with a gift for picking bad movies. 'Drive Angry' is a very entertaining B, C or D-movie, an over-the-top and in-your-face grindhouse gore, guns and 'Gun it' picture that's about epic shootouts, bone-snapping brawls, bare breasts and muscle cars. The gunplay is funny and the sex hilarious in this 'Ghost Rider is Gone in 60 Seconds' mashup." -- Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel
The 3-D
" 'Drive Angry' is intensely bloody, violent and carries quite a few payoffs that are well delivered. It's also a movie you'd actually want to see in 3-D, unlike so many frauds in the marketplace these days. In fact, Lussier, who directed 'My Bloody Valentine 3D,' shows his growth as a 3-dimensional director by taking 'Drive Angry' to new heights. Seeing it in Real D, the depth was astounding, and Lussier throws a few CGI tricks right in the viewer's face. Even more impressive was his flashback sequence that could easily become one of the most influential in the 3-D age (the way he layers three 'thoughts' at once is mind-blowing visually). In short, it's worth the extra few bucks." -- Brad Miska, Bloody Disgusting
Going Grindhouse
" 'Drive Angry' is loud and busy, and it's rarely boring. But it's also never really good. 'Drive Angry' comes at the tail end of the grindhouse revival trend, and while it's better made than films like 'Machete' or the scores of indie films that followed in Quentin Tarantino's wake, it succumbs to the same problem so many of those movies do: it's a movie about the things that the filmmakers think are cool, and that's never cool. 'Drive Angry' isn't about anything, it's just a series of ideas that struck Lussier and Farmer as awesome, strung together at feature length. There's a lot of balls in Drive Angry, and even some brains, but no heart." -- Devin Faraci, Badass Digest
The Final Word
" 'Drive Angry' is, in the end, a genre romp. It's not aiming any higher than that. But it is made with real skill and style, and there's such knowledge of genre in the way they have built the script and both embraced and avoided certain conventions that it makes me feel like we're just seeing Farmer and Lussier warm up. Hopefully they'll keep working with collaborators as game as their partners in this particular crime, because 'Drive Angry' is a white-knuckle ride worth taking." -- Drew McWeeny, HitFix

What Should Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway Wear To The Oscars?
Fashion experts weigh in on some of the trends they expect to see at this year's Academy Awards show, which takes place this Sunday.

For Hollywood stars attending the Academy Awards, the days leading up to the big show this Sunday likely are filled with fittings, meetings with stylists and major decisions about what they will wear. With so many big names up for awards at this year's event, MTV News wanted to know what some of the Oscars fashion trends will be.
We caught up with fashion-industry maven and People's Revolution founder, Kelly Cutrone, and Faran Krentcil, digital director at Nylon magazine, and asked them to weigh in on what they believe will light up the red carpet at this year's ceremony. Krentcil predicts that the big trends will be color and American designers. Cutrone, who says that blue and lavender will be popular, also wants to see lots of American designers' creations on display.
Regarding first-time Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld, the ladies had a very specific idea of what the teen should wear to the show. "She's not a trend yet, but she will be," Krentcil admitted. "Her Golden Globe and SAG Awards looks were incredible, and the girl is only 14! She's one to watch on the fashion front, for sure. I wouldn't be surprised if by next year, she's got a high-fashion campaign like Miu Miu."
Cutrone noted that the "True Grit" star should go for "short, super fun and nothing overpowering. She should be the pixie and we don't need to bury her in too much dress." She added, "I think that Michelle Williams needs to step it up. She needs to dress it up. She needs to hit it. I think she needs to go from pixie to sexy," noting that Williams should pass the pixie throne to Steinfeld.
Faran joked about the Oscars' two young co-hosts, "Anne Hathaway will wear Valentino. James Franco will wear Anne Hathaway."
Meanwhile, Cutrone had more specific advice for the female emcee for the night. "I think she should wear an American designer. I think she should keep it really elegant and have an Audrey Hepburn moment — a great, very clean moment," she said. "[She should wear] red, white or black; really simple. She needs to look really pulled together. She really should step it up."
As for Best Actress Oscar nominee and mom-to-be, Natalie Portman, Cutrone thinks that her look will be the most talked about for years to come. "She will have one of the most memorable maternity outfits ever," she predicted. "It will live on like a Princess Grace of Monaco sort of image."
Will it be a regal evening for "The King's Speech"? Can "The Social Network" dial up Oscar gold? Don't miss MTV News' "2011 Oscars Live" at 6 p.m. Sunday, February 27, when we'll be chatting with your favorite Hollywood stars live from the red carpet on MTVNews.com, and stick with us all Oscar night for winners, interviews, photos and more!

Report: Bud Selig Vetoes Proposed $200M FOX Loan to Frank McCourt, Dodgers
Filed under: Dodgers, Sports Business and Media
Selig made the decision several weeks ago, according to the Times, denying McCourt a much-needed source of financing as he continues to struggle through a messy divorce and attempts to maintain control of the storied franchise.
McCourt planned to use the Dodgers' cable television rights as collateral for the loan, proposing to extend the team's contract with FOX for as many as four more years if he was unable to repay the money.
McCourt already has received an advance on television rights fees owed to the team by FOX, the Times has reported.

'Spider-Man' Musical Star Talks Production Delays And Fighting Fear
'To give the kind of performance you want to give, there's no room for fear,' T.V. Carpio tells MTV News.
By Eric Ditzian
T.V. Carpio

"Things are constantly changing. It's a very creative process," T.V. Carpio told MTV News, explaining the seemingly ever-shifting nature of "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark."
For some observers on the outside looking in, that might come off as spin, an "it's all good" mentality meant to calm the public while inside the musical's playhouse, "Spider-Man" continues to struggle to find its creative footing. But to Carpio, it's all part of the inspirational process of working with Julie Taymor, the visionary behind the "Lion King" musical and films like 2007's "Across the Universe."
"You have to be down to jump, because Julie is always having these crazy visions," said Carpio, who took on the role of the villainess Arachne after the original actress left the production. "She's amazing like that, and you just have to go with it."
Still, there's no doubting that the cast of "Turn Off the Dark" has had a lot to just go with. From multiple delays in the show's official Broadway debut to highly publicized safety issues and injuries, the musical is being buzzed about for all the wrong reasons. Recent reports suggest fresh behind-the-scenes talent is being welcomed into the fold.
Carpio, however, denied reports that Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, a playwright and comics writer, has been hired to work on script issues. "I haven't heard anything about a writer joining us. Whenever they do change anything, they make an announcement to the cast," she said. "They told us that all the rumors, if we haven't been told about them, aren't true."
The cast has been working closely with musical supervisor Paul Bogaev, one of Taymor's longtime collaborators, to enhance various musical numbers. "There aren't any new songs," Carpio said. "Paul's just working with the songs we already have. Yesterday, he helped write a new part for my monologue in the second act. And we put in a new flight. He's just another set of outside eyes helping sculpt what's already there. But he is the only new one who's actually there and working.
"Although it's new, because he hasn't worked on 'Spider-Man' all along, Julie works with a lot of the same people," she added. "The family we have working on the music -- the choreographers, dancers, actors -- is sort of like the family from 'Across the Universe.' It didn't feel crazy, like, 'Who's this guy?' It was like, 'Oh hey, Paul!' "
Through all the changes, Carpio has kept herself insulated within what she affectionately calls her "'Spider-Man' bubble" and has been readying for the upcoming premiere of "Limitless," a thriller in which she co-stars with Bradley Cooper that hits theaters on March 18. Whatever happens with "Turn Off the Dark" in the future, the actress has managed to keep anxiety at bay -- the original Arachne, Natalie Mendoza, dropped out after suffering a concussion during a high-flying stunt -- and focused on the task at hand: delivering an entertaining Broadway experience.
"To give the kind of performance you want to give, there's no room for fear. There's always adrenaline, but it's not about fear. You just have to trust you can do it," she said. "I don't care about what goes on outside. I can't control what people say; I can only control my performance. That's the only thing I can give."

Stern Not Enthralled With Rampant Speculation About Anthony, Howard
Filed under: Magic, Nuggets, NBA Rumors, Sports Business and Media
LOS ANGELES -- It seems even David Stern is getting tired of all the Carmelo Anthony drama.
In an interview at All-Star Weekend on Thursday night with FanHouse's Sam Amick and Chris Tomasson, the NBA commissioner was asked if the constant speculation about where the Denver star, who is on the trading block, soon might be playing has become somewhat of a negative for the league.
"Yes, I think that,'' Stern said. "Honestly, it can't be helpful getting to the place where the sport is so popular now and the ruminations about it in the media so over the top, in a good way, I suppose, that if a player doesn't sign a new contract, the speculation begins.
"In fact, it's now gone to the next level. Poor Dwight Howard (of Orlando). He's out there playing his head off and the media is, 'Oh, where's he going next?' What is that all about? It's ridiculous.''
There has been speculation about where Howard might play after his contract could expire in the summer of 2012. Stern was asked how he might change the situations involving Anthony and Howard.
"I have some great ideas,'' Stern said. "But it would be less employment for the (Fourth) Estate (the media). It's what we live with. That's what we do.''

Man Has $50,000 Puck Shot Overturned? It Must Be a Movie
Filed under: Sports Business, Sports Business and Media
"All right everybody, let's hear it for Tropical Time and let's hear it for Bush Bavarian. If you're going to drink a beer, you might as well make it Busch Bavarian.''That's how Jackie Moon, played by Will Ferrell in the movie Semi-Pro, made the introduction.
You know how Ferrell movies are just too ridiculous? How they could never come true?
Think again.
"Ladies and Gentlemen,'' he said. "I want you to welcome this man that's going to attempt the impossible, the $10,000 free throw from the other side of the court. The moonshot.''
That was the movie, about a fictional and fledgling team from the old ABA, running ridiculous stunts and promotions to try to stay alive.
This is real life: On Saturday night, the Indianapolis Ice of the United States Hockey League held its own impossible-shot promotion. Shoot the puck the length of the ice into the far net, which was blocked off entirely except for a three-inch slot at the bottom.

No Football, No Problem: Rugby to Fill Void
Filed under: Sports Business and Media, Action Sports
But not to worry, football fans. Dave Sitton has the cure for what may ail you: Take a few hours of rugby and call him Monday morning.
The linkage isn't so far-fetched, says Sitton, who will analyze more than 15 hours of USA Sevens Rugby coverage this weekend for NBC and Universal Sports, since a lot of what we know as football has its roots in rugby.
For instance, what we know as scrimmage is related to scrummage, a rugby term that involves one player placing his hands in the crotch of another player to receive a ball to start a play.
Sound familiar?
"It's not as radical (the linkage between football and rugby) as some might think," said Sitton, who has coached and played rugby for more than 30 years. "There's a logical progression both historically and tactically that will allow a first-time viewer who watches football to understand that we don't have a Super Bowl unless there's rugby."

Liam Neeson's 'Unknown': The Reviews Are In!
Critics give high marks to Neeson, but are divided on neo-Hitchcockian thriller.
By Shawn Adler
January Jones and Liam Neeson in "Unknown"
Photo: Warner Bros.
With apologies to the groundhog, Liam Neeson is quickly becoming February's biggest star. Two years after the action-thriller "Taken" made him perhaps Hollywood's unlikeliest action star, the Oscar-nominated man who played Oskar Schindler is back to kick butt and take names in "Unknown," a neo-Hitchcockian thriller about a man who awakens after a car accident to discover the life he thought he had has been taken away, possibly just an after-effect of amnesia.
Is the movie itself worth forgetting? Here's what the critics are saying:
The Twist
"As much as 'Unknown' tries to be an intelligent thriller for grown-ups, the premise is pretty silly and normally, when that's the case, you know it's going to lead to an equally silly twist. Dark Castle regular Jaume Collet-Serra's previous movie 'Orphan' had one of the funniest twist endings possibly ever, though this doesn't quite achieve that extreme of insanity because the plot is so based in thriller clichés we've seen before, there aren't as many surprises until that third act. We won't give away the big twist, though we'll say that the film's biggest problem is that once it's revealed, much of what happens in the film's third act negates what happened earlier by turning much of it into nonsensical drivel." — Edward Douglas, Coming Soon
Will the Real Mr. Neeson Please Stand Up?
"With Harrison Ford mellowing with the years, Liam Neeson is stepping into the position, near and dear to action fans, of the average, over-civilized American man who, finding himself surrounded by trouble, picks up a tire iron and learns to swing it. It's one thing to convince an audience you're tough when you're covered with muscles. But to do so while wearing a jacket and tie takes concentration and sincerity. Neeson brings his own special quality to this type of role. As we saw in 'Taken,' in which he had to rescue his daughter in Paris, and now in 'Unknown,' playing a scholar whose identity gets stolen in Berlin, Neeson has a way of getting upset — a frantic purposefulness — that fills viewers with both empathy and anticipation: He's so miserable that we care." Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle
"Casting is crucial to a movie. The right lead changes every other aspect of the film, impacting the tone and the way scenes play. The wrong lead will suck the energy out of a movie, leaving what could have been a delight leaden and dull. Liam Neeson is the wrong lead for 'Unknown.' What's worse, he doesn't seem to care; bringing one boring level of gruff intensity to every scene, Neeson is unmodulated and uninterested in creating anything subtle. Which sounds weird when talking about a big, ultimately dumb movie like 'Unknown,' but if Jaume Collet-Serra's last film, the incredible 'The Orphan,' proves one thing it's that his special brand of lunacy needs strong, subtle actors to play it." — Devin Faraci, Badass Digest
The Supporting Players
"The venerable German actor Bruno Ganz plays a former Stasi agent whom Martin hires to help him prove his identity, and Frank Langella has a brief and marvelous small part as an American professor whom Martin contacts for help. The one scene that Ganz and Langella have together is worth the price of admission. Both are actors capable of elevating whatever material they're in, and for a few moments this fair-to-middling spy drama feels as emotionally rich and morally ambiguous as a Graham Greene novel." — Dana Stevens, Slate
The Final Word
"This is a studio thriller released in February, people, not the second coming of Hitchcock. Still, keep your expectations reasonable and director Jaume Collet-Serra — undaunted by the presence of the 2005 'House of Wax' remake on his résumé — will exceed them, delivering an exciting and unjaded entertainment with tremendous atmosphere, one that will keep you guessing almost to the final frame." — Andrew O'Hehir, Salon

'Hangover Part II' Trailer Drops Next Week, Todd Phillips Says
'It's truly a teaser, so it might end up frustrating more than solving questions,' director tells MTV News.

After the record-breaking success of "The Hangover" and the endless speculation about where the sequel would take place, after the casting gossip and the Mel Gibson controversy, after the first photos and the behind-the-scenes set visit, we're about to get our first peek at actual footage from "The Hangover Part II."
"We have a teaser trailer that I just finished color for yesterday night, so that'll come out next week," Todd Phillips told MTV News on Friday (February 18) while promoting the DVD release of "Due Date." "And I think it comes out in theaters on 'Hall Pass,' which should be next Friday."
It can't come soon enough. The film hits theaters May 26, and up until now, official glimpses at the production have been few and far between. The only reason for the dearth of Warner Bros.-sanctioned material, though, is that Phillips and friends didn't wrap production on the flick that long ago.
"We've had, like, one photo out, and that's just because we finished shooting on New Year's Day, and the movie comes out on Memorial Day," the writer/director said. "It's really just a crazy-tight schedule."
While Phillips wouldn't dish details about what we'll actually see in the teaser, he did emphasize that fans should temper their expectations: The footage will hardly offer a comprehensive dive into what the film is all about. "It's truly a teaser, so it might end up frustrating more than solving questions," he told us. "I love it. It's a true tease, if that makes sense. It's just one of those things that's gonna make you go, 'OK, let's see what more they have.' It's to pique interest and to remind people what's coming down the pike."

College Basketball Poll Is Just a Sham
Filed under: NCAA Basketball, Sports Business and Media, college-sports
In 1869, in Cardiff, N.Y., -- just south of Syracuse's Carrier Dome where this week's 17th-ranked men's college basketball team plays -- some farmers digging a well announced they found petrified remains of a giant man. (No, he was not the first big stiff Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim recruited.) He was 10-feet tall. And the fellow who spoke for the discovery, a cigar maker named George Hull, started charging 50 cents to see the Cardiff Giant turned to stone.
But a Yale paleontologist, who inspected the find, debunked it as nothing more than a tall tale after finding it was made of gypsum. The would-be amateur anthropologists confessed to fashioning fiction.
Yet, people continued to flock to see the hoax and -- now at the Farmers' Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y., -- still do.
After all, we love fakes. Elvises. IDs. The Colbert Report.
How about the college basketball poll?
